The story begins with Julius, who moves into a new home with his cat, Gee. The setting is South Florida, near the Everglades—a fresh location for Julius to work on his latest script. As a writer for award-winning academic film, Julius seeks inspiration in this quiet, eerie environment.
On the day Julius moves in, he brings only basic equipment, luggage, and furniture from his car into the house. The home is described as simple, flat, and old-fashioned—a very old structure renovated for new tenants. Julius shrugs off its age and remarks to himself, "This is perfect: quiet, roomy, and with just a little ominous feel to it."
The exterior of the house is cloaked in vines and overhanging branches from giant trees, their webs glistening in the sunlight. "This is perfect for us, Gee. Isn't that right, girl?" Julius calls to his cat. Suddenly, Gee bolts across the yard, leaping back into the car as though she were running from something—or being chased.
Julius watches her with concern, stumbling slightly. "Hey, Gee, what's wrong, girl? Why are you running back into the car? This is our new home! Come on, you'll get used to it. It'll be good for both of us."
Determined, Julius continues carrying boxes into the house. As he does, he catches a strange smell in the air. "What's that smell?" he mutters before shrugging it off. Inside, as he walks down the hallway, the silence is broken by the sudden cracking of a wall. Julius pauses briefly but dismisses it and continues toward one of the rooms. Gee, however, follows cautiously, stopping suddenly to stare at a corner where a crack runs along the wall.
From the cat’s perspective, something within the crack seems to breathe—a steady, eerie motion—and stares back at her with a disturbing stillness. Gee hisses, her fur bristling as though something threatening were watching.
"Hey, girl, relax," Julius says, picking her up. "You're just nervous because this place is new. You'll get used to it. I love it here." He soothes her with a pat, then carries her back to the car to unload the remaining boxes.
But the unsettling air of the house lingers, hinting at something more sinister lurking within its walls.
As Julius finished unloading the rest of his belongings from the car, he headed back into the house before sundown. Suddenly, along the stretch of the yard leading into the woods, a rattling noise caught his attention. Curious, Julius placed some boxes by his front door and turned toward the sound, wondering what might be lurking in the woods.
"Gee, girl! Where are you? Where have you run off to?" Julius called out for his cat as he cautiously approached the woods. The closer he got, the less movement he noticed, heightening his curiosity. Silence blanketed the air, and Julius froze as he heard a low hiss that sent chills down his spine.
"MEOW!"
Startled, Julius spun around toward the house and saw Gee calling to him from the doorway.
"She was in the house the whole time," Julius muttered in relief, the chills quickly fading. Without wasting another moment, he hurried back inside, shutting the door firmly behind him.
As the sun sets, the darkness of the night floods the sky, and the house in the woods takes on a haunting appearance. Inside, Julius begins lighting up the house, feeling a surge of excitement.
"See, Gee, this is what I need," he says aloud. "The sound of crickets and creatures outside and a malice-filled silence inside. Now I can set up my desk, start writing, and see what amazing story I can come up with."
Julius's cat, Gee, doesn’t pay him any attention. She’s too busy staring up at the corner of the wall where a small hole catches her eye.
Julius sets about arranging his workspace to begin writing. However, the oppressive silence feels too much for him. Frustrated, he gets up and walks to his bedroom, with Gee following closely behind. In the bedroom, Julius rummages through boxes and luggage, clearly searching for something.
"Where is it? I know I packed it somewhere... ah, voilĂ ! Here it is!" Julius exclaims as he pulls out a portable record player and a vinyl. Carrying them back to his work area, he declares, "This will get me in the groove to write—classic contemporary music!"
Julius sets up the record player, places the vinyl on it, and starts the music. He takes a deep breath, sits at his desk, and begins writing.
Hours pass. Gee lies restlessly in her homemade bed beside Julius, occasionally glancing up at him. Eventually, she notices him staring blankly at the wall, his pen idle. Sensing something is wrong, she calls out with a loud "MEOW." Julius doesn’t respond, his gaze fixed on the wall. Now concerned, Gee jumps onto Julius’s lap and stares up at him.
Julius sighs and strokes her fur. "Well, Gee, I think I’ve lost it," he says, his voice heavy with defeat. "I can’t come up with a story. I did all of this for nothing."
Later that night, after hours of struggling to write, Julius gave up and decided to go to bed. He packed away his materials, turned off the lights, and headed to his room. Gee trailed behind, hopping onto the foot of the bed as Julius pulled the blanket over himself. The soft hum of the record player still spinning quietly in the work area filled the house with a faint static. The stillness of the woods outside soon lulled them both into a deep sleep.
Sometime after midnight, a faint creak echoed from the front door. Gee’s ears perked up, and her eyes snapped open. She stared intently toward the hallway but didn’t move from her spot. Julius stirred slightly but remained asleep. Moments later, a faint shuffle of footsteps sounded from the living room. Gee let out a soft, low growl—a rare sound for her—before hopping off the bed and slinking toward the hallway. The dim moonlight streaming through the windows revealed nothing at first, but the sound of something metallic being moved sent a chill through the silence.
The noise finally stirred Julius. He sat up groggily, blinking into the darkness. "Gee?" he called softly, his voice thick with sleep. He reached for the flashlight he kept on his nightstand and clicked it on. Just as the beam of light illuminated the hallway, a loud crash came from the work area. Julius froze, his breath caught in his throat. Gee hissed, her fur standing on end as she darted back into the room and leaped onto the bed.
Clutching the flashlight tightly, Julius swung his legs over the side of the bed, his heart pounding. He whispered to himself, "Who could possibly be out here? Nobody knows about this place..." He slowly crept toward the work area, the wooden floor creaking under his weight. As he rounded the corner, his flashlight revealed a broken window, shards of glass scattered across the floor, and his record player lying on its side. Papers from his desk were scattered everywhere, as if someone had rifled through them in a hurry.
Julius crouched to examine the mess, his mind racing with possibilities. As he did, a faint whisper echoed from somewhere deeper in the house, sending a chill down his spine. He spun around, aiming the flashlight down the dark hallway toward the living room, but there was nothing there. Gee let out a low growl from the bedroom doorway, her wide eyes locked on something Julius couldn’t see. "What is going on?" he muttered, his voice trembling.
Julius looks toward the corner of the wall where Gee has been staring. Gee continues her low growl as Julius cautiously walks closer. The corner is dark and dense, untouched by any light in the house. Julius shines his flashlight into the darkness. To his surprise, he notices a fairly large hole in the wall, big enough for a small animal to crawl through. The hole is so dark that even the beam of the flashlight seems to vanish into it.
"Was this hole always here? It’s so dark, Gee. Do you see something in there?" Julius asks nervously.
Gee inches closer to the hole but suddenly stops and begins to hiss furiously. "Gee, what’s wrong? Do you see something? Stay back, girl," Julius warns, his voice wavering. He leans closer to inspect the hole, but an eerie, unsettling feeling begins to wash over him. The house falls into complete silence as Julius inches nearer, shining his flashlight directly into the hole. Gee stares intently at the darkness, her body tense.
Suddenly, a bloodcurdling screech pierces the silence. A bat bursts out of the hole, flying straight at Julius. He ducks instinctively as the bat swoops past him, darting into the main room and circling above Julius’s work desk. Gee lets out a loud, startled cry and springs into action, chasing after the bat. Julius panics, unsure of what to do, as he watches the bat flit erratically around the room. It knocks over several items, breaking some in its frantic attempt to escape.
Realizing the bat might leave if given an exit, Julius cautiously moves toward the door. He opens it wide, hoping the bat will fly out. Gee leaps into the air, swiping at the bat as it flutters toward the open door and finally escapes into the night. Relieved, Julius quickly slams the door shut—but then he realizes Gee had bolted outside in her pursuit of the bat.
Panicking, Julius flings the door open again and steps outside with his flashlight. "Gee! Here, girl! Come back! I’m sorry!" he calls desperately. He scans the front yard with the beam of his light but sees no sign of her. The woods surrounding the house are too dark, and fear keeps him from venturing farther. After a few tense minutes of calling out to her with no response, Julius reluctantly returns inside, his heart sinking.
Sitting in the quiet house, Julius feels a pang of guilt. He decides to wait up, hoping Gee will find her way back by morning. As he waits and tries to stay awake throughout the night while the silent night becomes present makes Julius fall into a sleep and into a dream.
